The Orlando area may not have the farms and orchards it once did, with development and the surge in population absorbing the agricultural lands, but there is still plenty of opportunity to get back to nature and pick your own fruits and vegetables — a true farm-to-table experience. There is always something in season and ready for harvest at these U-Pick Farms near Orlando.
One of the popular crops in the area is blueberries and we were told that the University of Florida has developed several varieties of blueberries that can withstand our long hot summers and short cool winters. Strawberries are plentiful in Central Florida too. Some of the farms also offer peaches, figs, grapes and watermelon, depending upon the season.
U-Pick suggestions:
- Call the farm first or look on the farm’s Facebook page to check on produce availability and hours of operation
- Dress comfortably, wear closed toe shoes, hats and sunscreen
- Be aware that there may be insects at these farms (after all, they are farms) so if members of your family are allergic to insects such as bees, take precautions.
- If you plan to spend the day, bring a cooler to keep berries and produce fresh
- Children should be supervised at all times
- And of course, no pets (other than service dogs) are allowed
