What if your local library offered more than books? What if you could check out a blood pressure monitor, themed science bundles, a ukulele, or even a knitting kit—all for free with your library card? Welcome to the world of the Library of Things, a growing movement that’s making it easier (and cheaper) to live well without owning everything you need.
Here in Central Florida, our library systems are ahead of the curve—and if you’re not already taking advantage, now’s the time to start.

What is a Library of Things?
It works just like getting books from the library, but for useful tools and activities. With your library card, you can check out anything that is in stock from the Library of Things. It is a perfect solution for spontaneous projects, beginning hobbies, or things you want to test out before purchasing.
Who Has a Library of Things?
We are lucky to have lots of local library systems and branches that participate in the Library of Things:
If your local library isn’t on this list, check if they have one as well. If they know the community is interested, they may institute their own Library of Things.
How to Get Started
- Many libraries have strict rules about renewing and returning the Library of Things collections. Make sure you read all the details before committing.
- If you damage or lose your items, you may have to pay to replace them.
- You must have a library card to use the Library of Things, and some branches require you to wait a certain amount of time after activation to access the Library of Things collections.
Living well in Central Florida doesn’t have to mean spending big. With the Library of Things, you can try new hobbies, tackle home projects, and enjoy fun experiences—all without pulling out your wallet.
