TAX-FREE SHOPPING IN ORLANDO
Florida tax-free shopping days
You’ll get a bit of a break when stocking up for the new school year by shopping during the designated tax-free shopping days in Orlando. From July 29 through August 11, 2024, you can purchase all of your back-to-school supplies without paying the tacked-on state fees.
You can also save now with the current tax-free holiday for recreation and sporting equipment. That tax holiday goes through July 31, 2024.
In Florida, state sales tax is 6 percent or $6 for every $100 spent. Usually, in cities or counties with additional local sales tax, that tax is also waived. If you spend $250 on eligible items, you’ll save at least $15 in sales taxes.
Individual qualifying items must be within designated price limits. If the price of an item is higher than the qualifying limit, the tax exemption does not apply. This fact sheet from the Florida Department of Revenue gives more details.
Eligible merchandise includes:
- Select school supplies $50 or less per item. Examples of tax-exempt items include lunch boxes, legal pads and pens.
- Clothing, footwear and some accessories $100 or less per item. Examples of tax-exempt accessories include purses, wallets and ties.
- Computers and certain accessories priced at $1,500 or less per item.
- Learning aids and jigsaw puzzles for $30 or less per item.
The following items are excluded:
- Cell phone, video game consoles, digital media receivers or devices that are not designed primarily to process data.
- Furniture, computer monitors with a TV receiver or peripherals designed for recreational use.
- Briefcases, suitcases and garment bags.
Examples of eligible electronics for $1,500 or less include:
- electronic book readers
- laptops
- desktops
- keyboards
- handheld devices
- tablets
- mice
- monitors
- routers
- personal digital assistants
- tower computers
Examples of eligible clothing items for $100 or less include:
- apparel
- wallets
- diaper bags
- fannypacks
- handbags
- watches
- backpacks
- footware, excluding skis, swim fins, roller blades, and skates
Examples of eligible school supplies include:
- notebooks
- erasers
- folders
- notebook paper
- legal pads
- lunch boxes
- rulers
- staplers
Examples of eligible education aids for for $30 or less include:
- flashcards
- interactive toys that teach reading and math
- matching and memory games
- puzzle books
- blocks
