Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the Union Army announced that all African Americans were free from enslavement in America. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation freed all enslaved people when it took effect in 1863, it was not enforced; this meant many people, especially in the Western states, did not know they were free.
To celebrate this momentous day in American history, Orlando offers many events that honor the African American experience.
